1. The Grammys Spearheads A Revolutionary Change

As a music head, I looked forward to a portion of the Grammys just to see the list of the winners before the live show.  A few years ago something changed.  I got a call from Vikter Duplaix looking to promote his nominated song, “Make A Baby”.  I have to admit, it was my least favorite tune by him but he explained his Grammy Nomination and how wonderful it felt to be recognized.  We put a small marketing campaign together and sent it to the voting members for the Grammys.  He did not win but he was recognized and it changed his career.

More artists like Vikter became a part of the voting committee and before we knew it artists like The Foreign Exchange and Eric Roberson were nominated.  I’m not sure who opened the floodgates but it has propelled a lot of amazing artists to the forefront of voting, nominations and plain ole recognition.

Fast forward to this past week.  Esperanza Spalding took home the award for Best New Artist.  Yes, she’s just that good.  When I read the hate mail and death threats from Bieber fans asking who is she?! They need to do a little research.  She did have the honor of hosting the pre-Grammy ceremony and did a wonderful job.  She’s been on a few late night shows since the release of her latest album, “Chamber Music Society” and is currently on a US tour.  Yet the questions still arise, what has she done, who is she?…. She beat Justin Bieber!  She has an amazing discography! She has bangin arms! SHE HAS TALENT!

Someone who recognized her talent voted for her and that leap of faith definitely reflected amongst the majority of the voting members. I believe, if given a chance, a lot of these independent artists will blow commercially successful artists out the water because they can leverage their talent and take risks most commercial artists cannot.

Sunday night proved that fame does not always win, talent does…
